Our wonderful trip to Cuba February 29, 2016 20:46

We were incredibly fortunate to travel to Cuba at the end of last year. As a keen traveller, architecture & antiques lover and all round culture vulture, I was hooked from the moment we stepped into our 1950’s Havana bound Taxi.

Cuba, although economically poor, has an undeniable richness in terms of its history, hospitality and picturesque land, sea and cityscapes.

Havana was particularly special and we were fortunate to spend five days wandering its mesmerising streets. We enjoyed our amble along the Malecon which became a wonderful routine for the first few days and provided our connection to Havana Vieja. Next stop was the National Park of Vinales and its endless rolling tobacco plantations, undoubtedly best explored on horseback. I was amazed to see that travel by horse and cart and plowing the fields with Oxen were the go to methods for transport and agriculture respectively. Trinidad with its cobbled streets and vibrant music scene made a great base for two days exploring, and I would highly recommend passing some time in this beautiful colonial town.

Highlights also included several delightful stays in Casas or homestays. Casa 1932 a hidden gem in Havana Centro was a particular favourite. Owned by an Art Deco enthusiast it was like staying in a small and perfectly curated museum. Casas Brisas D’Alameida was similarly as special in Trinidad. Owned by a lovely Cuban family, they had restored their colonial house to rustic simplicity. Beautiful terracotta floors, and exposed wooden beams were positioned perfectly around a luscious and green courtyard.

Cuba provided an unknown treat at every turn. Even the most dilapidated and run down colonial ruins provided intriguing beauty.

I cannot recommend visiting Cuba enough and hopefully it retains much of it's character for years to come.

We are so pleased to finally be launching Ottoman St online after 15 years of running a successful and solely offline business.

We will be updating the website with exquisite new items on a frequent basis and using this blog as a way to share updates on new arrivals and the shows and fairs that we will be attending. We will also be writing more generally on interiors, sharing ideas and our appreciation of all things that are in tune with the Ottoman St way of life!

Thanks for joining us, and we look forward to updating you soon.
